Caroline Ubben wins the Brooks, LeBoeuf, Bennett, Foster & Gwartney
10th Annual Freedom Scholarship Essay Contest.

A Leon High School student has won the 10th annual Freedom Scholarship, the largest scholarship offered in North Florida, which is sponsored by the Brooks, LeBoeuf, Bennett, Foster & Gwartney law firm.

Awarded on the basis of an essay about “What the Bill of Rights Means to Me,” the $2,500 scholarship was awarded to Caroline Ubben, a recent Leon H.S. summa cum laude graduate. Caroline plans to study Physical Therapy when she begins the University of Florida Honors Program in the fall, although she is also considering law.

We are proud to offer a program that encourages the next generation of scholars to think deeply about how important the Bill of Rights is to our American way of life and to them as individuals,” partner Dean LeBoeuf said.

In her essay, Ubben contrasted her freedoms ensured by the Bill of Rights to the situation she observed while on a mission trip in Cuba.  She also wrote about her first-hand experience of the rights afforded to crime victims and the people accused of victimizing them during her volunteer service in the State Attorney’s office.

The essay contest is open to students from Leon, Gadsden, Wakulla and Jefferson counties.  The daughter of Matt and Michelle Ubben, Caroline is the second Leon High School student to win the award in its 10-year history. This year’s contest was judged by Circuit Judges Jackie Fulford, Dawn Caloca-Johnson and John Cooper.
